A quick history of Totterdells
You know Totterdells as a family run business looking after all your telecoms needs but how did the company start? We give you a quick history of this Irish success story.
Totterdells are synonymous with the mobile industry, having been in the industry since its conception in Ireland. But that wasn’t always the case. If you lived in South Dublin and North Wicklow the first time you would have come across the name would have been when you were looking for a TV!
In 1957 the Totterdell family opened its first electronic retail store in Dun Laoghaire. From that humble start they had, by 1980, become one of the largest finance rental stores in Ireland. With a huge customer base all looking to acquire their first TV’s on hire purchase. Yes, for those of you too young to remember, TV’s were so expensive that you leased them or got them on HP! Hard to believe nowadays.
In 1987 the first mobile phones hit the market in Ireland and like TV’s they were expensive (and heavy!) so they were a perfect fit for the Totterdell business as purchasers would buy them on HP. As the mobile phone changed so did the Totterdell business as the family realised this was the exciting future of the business. It’s that ability to see the trends and adapt that has, in part, made Totterdells so successful.
After becoming a business partner to Three (formerly O2), the company has continually brought innovation and insight to the industry. Today, it’s a 50+ person business and continues to grow. But the family has never lost sight of what made it successful since opening the doors on the first business in 1957. ‘My father always said if you look after the customers the customers will look after you’ said Kevin Totterdell, MD of the company.
